The Dubai Municipality has said its environment department has undertaken a project to rejuvenate beaches of the emirate, with the help of the Coastal Management Section.
It said the project is part of an integrated and continuous programme whose objective is to improve the coastal environment and support conservation.
Hamdan Al Shaer, director of Environment Department, said: "Beaches are subject to seasonal Shamal winds that deprive them of vital resources needed.
"As the time passes by, this will result in loss of beach sands and emergence of rocks and stones thereby causing beachgoers to lose the comfort and security.
"This matter requires maintenance and nourishing the beaches in a scientific and well-planned manner."
The department has already restored the Jumeira 3 Beach, Umm Suqeim 1 Beach and the Al Mamzar Park Beach, all of which were nourished with 600,000 cubic metres of high-quality beach sand.
Alya AbdulRahim, head of coastal management section, said restoration work on the Jumeira 3 Beach started by restoring the 800 metre long rock breakwater that lies parallel to the beach.
More rock layers were added to the stretch to prevent erosion of beach sand.
"Furthermore, this beach has been nourished by some half million cubic metres of clean beach sand," she said, adding that work on fixing the southern side of the Umm Suqeim 1 coastal line is already underway and construction of a vertical sand barrier has been completed along a 120 metre stretch.
The objective of this barrier is to prevent sand erosion and preserve the beach which has now been nourished with some 40,000 cubic metres of beach sand.
Alya said that the Coastal Management Section has also completed restoration work of the Beach at Al Mamzar Park which is now receiving a large number of visitors. This beach has been nourished with more than 30,000 cubic metres of sand.
The Coastal Management Section has, meanwhile, introduced measures to control vehicular movement on the Jumeira and Umm Suqeim beaches by placing barricades and marking selective areas for parking.
Alya said that the step is aimed at ensuring the safety of beachgoers. - TradeArabia News service
