Hypermarket chain Carrefour has boosted its eco friendly campaign by halving the cost of environmentally friendly reusable bags across all its stores in the region.
It has further committed to reduce the use of plastic bags by the end of 2008.
Carrefour, operated by Majid Al Futtaim, will be running a special 10-day promotion starting today (October 5), when shoppers will be able to purchase the popular reusable bags at Dh1, instead of Dh2.
The reusable bags, which Carrefour sees as an eco-friendly option to using the non-biodegradable plastic bag, can be bought at checkout counters, and if they become damaged they can be replaced at any Carrefour outlet free of charge.
Carrefour first introduced an environmental campaign in 2007 and since that time it has sold more than 800,000 reusable bags in the UAE alone.
“Conserving the ecological balance by reducing the use of plastic bags is just one of the many steps that we have taken at Carrefour to help the environment,” stated Henri Changeux, senior vice president, Carrefour.
Carrefour's reusable bag campaign is actively supported by Emirates Diving Association and UAE’s Ministry of Environment.-TradeArabia News Service
