'Dealmaker' set for Mena debut
Dubai

Dealmaker, a popular US and European business and lifestyle magazine dedicated to the trail-blazing, ‘working wealthy’ in the world of business and finance, will be launched in Dubai today.

Building on a pedigree earned on Wall Street and in the City of London, 'Dealmaker Middle East' is a new concept in business magazines and is entering the Mena region as a reflection of the growing importance of the Middle East in the global capital markets.

The magazine, published by New York-based Doubledown Media, was founded by 33-year old finance and media entrepreneur, Magnus Greaves.

A co-founder and CEO of MacFutures, the world’s largest independent futures trading company, Greaves made his entry into the media world after orchestrating the sale of MacFutures for just under $50 million in 2004.

Greaves, who is in Dubai for the launch, pointed out that financial institutions in the region were just starting to emerge from the shadow of the more developed capital markets (a timely observation as Wall Street stalwarts, Lehman Bros. and Merrill Lynch topple under the weight of the credit crunch).

“Dealmakers from Doha to Damascus and Marrakesh to Muscat are starting to make waves on an international scale. As we go to press on this first issue, grand old Wall Street names are disappearing forever,” he said.

Dealmaker targets a readership of capital markets professionals at the cutting edge of the financial sector, buying, selling and merging companies across borders and in all industry sectors: truly the people oiling the wheels of international capital and creating wealth not just for themselves, but for nations.

'The typical reader will be the modern CEO who has grown his company through strategic acquisition and divestiture; or the investment banker who is making the deals that take companies public or private; or the lawyer and advisor broking the deal; or the institutional investor with the masterplan to grow his company’s returns through the public markets,' he noted.

'Dealmaker’s arrival in Dubai is ample testimony to the strides that the region has made. As more and more deals are being made in the region, it is important for the world to know more about the painstaking work that is done behind-the-scenes and the people at the heart of the successful negotiations,' said John Foster, ME managing editor for International Media Ventures (IMV), the publisher.

The magazine will profile the movers and shakers, get behind the scenes of the biggest deals, provide pearls of wisdom for dealmakers, information on the latest tools of the trade, and tips on how to make the most of a good deal, Forsdter explained.

Among the regular sections is ‘Players’, which will profile the key dealmakers; ‘Initial Offering’, which will highlight the trends and events from the dealmaker’s world, covering topics like golf, food, art, literature, charity, real estate and more; ‘Road Warrior’, which will have articles on products and services that make life on the road more productive and pleasurable; and other features exploring the dealmaker’s world.

Dealmaker Middle East has a team of highly skilled, international journalists based on The Street and in The City, rubbing shoulders with the great and good of the international dealmaking community behind it.

This resource is supplemented by a team of financial journalist based in the GCC, bringing the news of the crucial deals, major mergers and prime acquisitions that are being made by Middle Eastern entrepreneurs, as and when they happen.

The visionary behind Dealmaker’s indomitable style is Wall Street veteran, Editor-in-Chief, Randall Lane, who has the distinction of becoming the youngest Bureau Chief of Forbes magazine in its 80-year history when at 27 he was appointed its Washington Bureau Chief.

“Everyone is here in the Gulf because of free trade and the flow of capital, and our global professional community stands in the middle of those trends. The Gulf is arriving as one of the capitals of capital. And thus, so is Dealmaker – into your mailbox”, said Lane.

Joining Greaves and the IMV team at the launch event, to give the proceedings a British twist is Dealmaker’s European publisher, Christian Price.

The 108-page inaugural issue of the bi-monthly Dealmaker Middle East leads on the highly complex deal that Borse Dubai sealed with Nasdaq and OMX.

The story reveals for the first time some of the intricate behind-the-scene dealmaking Essa Kazim, Borse Dubai’s Chairman and Soud Ba’alawy, Vice Chairman, Borse Dubai and Executive Chairman, Dubai Group, had to conduct to seal this extraordinary intercontinental merger.-TradeArabia News Service
