HSBC showcases record-breaker’s feat

Dubai, January 19, 2008

At a series of dinners held this week in Muscat, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, hosted by Stuart Crocker, CEO HSBC Private Bank UAE/Oman, Dr Bertrand Piccard outlined his round the world balloon flight experience.

He outlined how he has been able to use this world record-breaking experience to gain a new perspective and has adopted a philosophy on life that he applies to his life and his new projects, which he talked about during the evening.

“I believe that if I take my experience as a balloonist and apply it as a metaphor for life I can touch others to see their own lives from a different perspective,” said Dr Piccard, who with Brian Jones, achieved the first non-stop round the world balloon flight as well as breaking the world record for both distance and duration.

This event is a one of a series called Perspectives and is linked to the HSBC Private Bank “Assume Nothing” philosophy.  In this series HSBC Private Bank has invited world renowned speakers such as Dr Piccard (and in Oman in January last year Dr Michio Kaku, a futurologist, physicist and BBC commentator) to come and present their perspectives and outline their experiences to small groups of private clients.

“This has been a successful way for us to generate new ideas and deepen our conversations with our clients. We have found that these events stimulate our thinking and when we come to discuss the more practical world of financial planning these ideas help us to consider more options together,” said Crocker.

Dr Piccard talked of both his balloon flight and his new project, Solar Impulse, a solar powered aircraft.

“During the round the world flight I learned that there were many things in my control, things that I could affect by my decisions and my skill.  However, the biggest lesson I had to learn was that I could not control the wind and where it was coming from.  I had to surrender a part of myself to this uncertainty and change altitude in order to find winds with a better direction or speed,” said Dr Piccard. – TradeArabia News Service
