Bahrain forum to focus on combating terrorism financing

Bahrain will today host the eighth GCC-EU workshop on combating financing of terrorism.

The Foreign Ministry and the Central Bank of Bahrain are organising the seminar in co-operation with the general secretariat of the GCC and the European Union, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

Ambassador Dr Nasser Mohammad Yousuf Al Balouchi will welcome the participants which includes representatives of domestic and foreign organisations.

The workshop will have four sessions entitled “activation mechanism of Security Council resolution 1373 (2001).

Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar will present working papers on mechanism to apply decisions of the Security Council relating to terrorism keeping in mind recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force on financing of terrorism.

The second session will focus on risk assessment at national level while combating the financing of terrorism. Bahrain will present a working paper on the subject.

The third session will discuss reducing exploitation of charities in the financing of terrorism and Bahrain’s experience in this area will be reviewed.

The fourth and final session will focus on information-sharing mechanisms and exchanging technical assistance between the GCC countries and the European Union.

The UAE will present two working papers, the first on controls necessary to ensure that the media promotes shared values on fighting extremism.

The second will discuss encouraging co-operation between anti-terrorism agencies to stop sources of funding for terrorist organisation “Daash”. - TradeArabia News Service
