Sharjah budget sees $5.52bn spending

SHARJAH, February 22, 2016

The UAE emirate of Sharjah has approved a total expenditure of Dh20.3 billion ($5.52 billion) in the 2016 general budget.

There has been an increase of 2 per cent in government spending and the budget sees a revenue increase of 8 per cent compared to the previous year.

It envisages a spending of 6 per cent of the budget for assistance and support and aims to create 2,500 new jobs for citizens in various government agencies. About 26 per cent of the budget has been allocated for salaries and wages and 46 per cent for the economic development sector to reinforce sustainable growth. The expenditure on infrastructure projects will be maintained, a statement said.

Waleed Al Sayegh, director general of the finance department of the Government of Sharjah, said: “The revenue increase of 8 per cent shows Sharjah’s strategic approach to diversifying resources. The general budget has taken into consideration changes in the world economic climate and shows the capabilities of Sharjah to move forward and to achieve sustainable growth.” -TradeArabia News Service
