Tsunami could hit Indian Ocean region

An earthquake that struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island on Wednesday could cause a destructive tsunami at various points throughout the Indian Ocean region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

'There is a possiblity of a destructive regional tsunami in the Indian Ocean,' the agency said, listing estimated tsunami travel times ranging from one hour or less to Indonesia and up to three hours to points in India, Sri Lanka and Australia's Cocos Islands.-Reuters
