Top experts for Green Building Forum

Leading experts will gather in Bahrain on Wednesday to discuss opportunities, challenges and benefits of using 'green' technologies in new design and construction projects.

The strong speakers' line-up confirmed for the Green Building Forum - whose theme is 'Innovating to protect the Environment' - reflects the increasing importance afforded to the issue of green building technologies in the Gulf region.

Housing Minister Shaikh Ibrahim bin Khalifa Al Khalifa will open the forum at Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre (BIEC) and deliver the keynote address.

He is expected to highlight the concept of environmental sustainability as a crucial element of Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030.

This will be followed by a keynote address by South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Buyelwa Sonjica, who will discuss 'The World and The Impacts on Environmental Issues post-Copenhagen'.

Qatar's Barwa and Qatari Diar Research Institute chairman and managing director Dr Yousef Al Horr, also a prominent real estate developer, will speak on 'The Development of the First Performance-Based Green Buildings Rating System in the Mena Region'.

This is followed by a presentation by leading US renewable energy scientist Mowafak Al Jassim from US National Renewable Energy Laboratory who will deliver a talk 'Sunny Future: How Buildings Are Rapidly Becoming Energy Generators'.

Emirates Green Building Council chairman Jeffrey Willis will speak on 'The Cost of Going Green & LEED', while global construction consultants Davis Langdon associate director Dr Alex Amato will deliver a talk 'Much Ado About Carbon'.

Professor and head of Bangalore, India-based DSI Infraconsulting at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering Vasanth Bhat will discuss 'A Holistic Approach Towards Green Building Design using Sustainable Technology in the Indian Contex', while Bahrain-based T-Linx vice-president Daneh Al Rayes will look at 'Smart Technology and Buildings'.

'Building Methodology and Steel Deck Diaphragms' will be the subject of a talk by Saudi-based Canam Asia Engineering technical and marketing manager Dr Wafik Ajam, while Saudi-based LCC Siporex's Dr Kamal Abu Arja will speak on 'The Value of Aerated Concrete - Allowing the Environment to Breathe'.

Professor Hans Haenlein MBE from Faculty of Sustainable Building at University of Reading, the UK, will give a presentation on 'Green Building and Training in an International Context' in conjunction with Bahrain University dean Dr Adnan Al Tamimi.

The opening session will be chaired by Al Hilal Group chairman Anwar Abdulrahman.

Panel sessions will be moderated by head of Unido ITPO in Bahrain Dr Hashim Hussein, Al Hilal Group managing director Ronnie Middleton and director of the British Council in Bahrain Brendan McSharry.

The forum is supported by the Industry and Commerce Ministry, Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Emirates Green Building Council, Federation of GCC Chambers of Commerce, the British Council, British Expertise and The Middle East Association. -TradeArabia News Service
