$12bn Jeddah Metro to roll out by 2022

Jeddah, August 8, 2014

The Jeddah Metro, which will cost about SR45 billion ($11.9 billion) to build, will be ready by 2022, a top official was quoted as saying in a report.

The new project is aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the business city, said the Arab News report.

“The project aims to cover 30 per cent of the city’s traffic,” Osama Ibrahim Abdu, CEO of the metro company, was quoted as saying.

“At present, public transport represents only two per cent of the total traffic volume in the city, which is witnessing a large number of development projects.”

“The metro will have three main lines,” he said.

“We will begin implementing the project in 18 months after drawing up designs and acquiring land,” Abdu said.
