Sharjah airport ..... ready to receive new generation aircraft.

Sharjah airport opens new $136m runway

SHARJAH, October 23, 2014

Sharjah International Airport has opened a new runway, which has been designed to receive new generations of Code F aircraft and giant freighters.

The runway, which has been built at a cost of Dh500 million ($136 million), is fully equipped with multiple control systems, aeronautics and lighting equipment and electromechanical equipment to match the CAT II level of operating efficiency, as determined by the specifications of the General Civil Aviation Authority of the UAE and International Civil Aviation Organisation, reported the Emirati news agency Wam.

Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the facility by taking off in his private jet and landing on the 4,060-m runway.

Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, attended the launch ceremony along with other senior government officials.

The runway, which is 60 m wide, runs parallel to an existing  runway. It also has two taxi-ways and eight connecting corridors that are intended to let aircraft get off the main runway and into the hangar in the shortest time possible, the report added.

The runway's operating efficiency can later be upgraded to CAT III B, said the Wam report citing senior officials.

Large aircraft and new-generations models such as the Boeing 747-800, Airbus A380, and giant freighters like AN124 and AN225 can easily land on the new runway, the report added.
