$266M PROJECT

King Abdullah Medical City project.....$266.3m grant from Saudi King

Major medical city to be built in Bahrain

MANAMA, December 5, 2014

A multimillion-dinar medical city is set to be built in Bahrain’s Southern Governorate.

The King Abdullah Medical City project, paid for through a SR1-billion ($266.3 million) grant from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, will be built on a one million-sq-m plot of land that His Majesty King Hamad has donated for the purpose, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

It will be run by the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), whose president Dr Khalid bin Abdulrahman Al Ohali signed an agreement with Saud Consult president Faisal bin Tariq Al Shawaf yesterday (December 4) for its design.

“We give our sincere thanks to King Abdullah, who directed the building of this city,” said Dr Al Ohali.

“King Abdullah said that the money was a present from Saudi people to Bahrain, to help serve and support the GCC. We also thank King Hamad for donating the land.

“There are several important directives by King Abdullah for this project, which include supporting the GCC and developing a joint Gulf educational project - working as a microcosm of the GCC in order to meet the needs of the community, take care of the humanitarian aspects and promote the well-being of citizens.

“Secondly, the city should focus on the importance of education and supporting it, as well as teachers and students.

“The city will have 264 beds, four centres of excellence and research, a college of medicine and student dorms, as well as accommodation for doctors.”

In preparation for the opening of the medical city, AGU has established a medical centre near Salmaniya Medical Complex, which consists of 51 clinics, two operating rooms and international-standard laboratories.

The agreement for the city's design was signed in the presence of Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi and Saudi Ambassador Abdullah bin Abdulmalik Al Shaikh.  - TradeArabia News Service
