Dubai summit to discuss safety designs in buildings

DUBAI, December 24, 2014

Leading global experts in the construction sector will be in Dubai, UAE, to debate safety standards and practices in the built environment at a major conference to be held next month.

A GCC-wide initiative, the Safety Design in Buildings conference will be held on January 20 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

The event will bring fire consultants, façade designers and testing experts together with safety system suppliers who will give an update on industry standards and provide a debating platform for trends and development.

They will offer insights through presentations and panel discussions for enhanced protection of people and assets in the Gulf, said the event organisers.

The key topics for discussion will include fire safety considerations for malls and other high-occupancy buildings with a view to strategy planning, material, egress and safety system requirements, which are constantly challenged by the ambitious infrastructure development in the GCC.

Rob Davies, technical director (fire and life safety) WSP, will give a lecture on 'Fire Safety Design Principles for Malls' in the morning followed by Alex Tsiolas, the fire engineering manager at AkzoNobel, who will discuss 'Optimization of Intumescent Coatings using Structural Analysis'.

At the event, Paris Stavrianidis, the general manager at FM Approvals, will discuss 'Contribution of Research in Product Testing to Safety Design in Buildings', while Shamim Sumar, the director (business development) at Aon Fire Protection, will put the spotlight on 'Inspection & Maintenance of Automated Sprinkler Systems'.

The other speakers lined up for the eventy include Altaf Afridi, the regional director (Mena) at Dorma, who will speak on the 'Access Control & Evacuation' process followed by Aaron Vanney, the operations manager at RJA, who will discuss 'Safety Enhancements for Super Tall Buildings'.
