Ashghal and CCC officials celebrate the safety milestone.

Ashghal achieves Qatar project safety milestone

DOHA, February 2, 2015

The Dukhan Highway Central project in western Qatar has achieved 30 million man hours without loss time injury (LTI), building on its last year’s record of 25 million man hours without LTI, said its developer Qatar’s Public Works Authority Ashghal.

The project, starting from the west of the Al Wajbah Interchange and ending east of the Al Sheehaniya town, is being constructed by the joint venture of Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), one of the largest construction firms in the Middle East, and Doha-based Teyseer Contracting Company.

It involves the construction of a new 15-km highway in addition to a dual carriageway with four lanes in each direction, service roads and multi-level interchanges to enhance traffic flow between Dukhan and the centre of Doha. The new road will also separate traffic on the expressway from that on local roads, said Ashghal in its statement.

Ashghal’s health and safety requirements in work zones have been met by CCC and Teyseer through a robust programme of safety and traffic management.

It included the provision and use of the first-crash cushion, European approved and tested temporary barriers (both metal and concrete) including accredited installation, specialist roadside working safety training accredited to UK and European standards and certified accordingly, the statement said.

The initiatives also included intensive health and safety discussions and awareness sessions, weekly management inspections, access control for sub-contractors, emergency support vehicles, site notice boards and other related procedures, it added.

"The project is an integral part of its expressway programme, which has set health and safety procedures and policies across all projects to ensure commitment and compliance from all contractors to achieve zero per cent incidents, injuries, environmental harm, and no security breaches on the expressway projects," said Jalal Yousef Al Salhi, the director of Ashghal’s infrastructure affairs.

He was speaking after honouring project director Bassam Salem at a ceremony to mark the achievement at the Ashghal headquarters in Doha in the presence of top Ashghal and CCC representatives.

The Dukhan project is managed by KBR as the programme management consultant and WS Atkins as the supervision consultant. A substantial section of the Dukhan Highway Central project had already been opened to traffic.-TradeArabia News Service
