Projects ... aim to utilise renewable energy efficiently.

Four new solar power pilot projects planned in Oman

MUSCAT, May 21, 2015

Oman’s Rural Areas Electricity Company (Raeco) is planning to set up four solar power projects as pilot ventures, according to a report.

It is aimed at efficiently utilising renewable energy, which will reduce use of fossil fuel, the Times of Oman report said.

The projects have been planned in Ibri (2,000 kW), Sharqiya (2,000 kW), Mudhaibi (2,000 kW) and Dhofar (500 kW), it said.

Renewable energy projects have several advantages, including a reduction in use of fossil fuel, energy supply security and a reduction in pollution, Khaleel Al Mandhari, head of renewable energy at Raeco, was quoted as saying.

"Raeco is using a lot of diesel for its power plants," he added.

The company, which has 35 diesel-fired power plants and six desalination plants, has a customer base of more than 30,000 spread across different parts of the country, including Dhofar, Musandam and Al Wusta regions.

Referring to another proposed wind project in Masirah, he said it will have a capacity to generate 1,600 kW of power.
