Bahrain bans building material shops in housing areas

MANAMA, June 6, 2015

Bahrain municipal officials have introduced a ban on all new machine rental and building materials shops opening in the Southern Governorate's residential areas, said a report.

The Southern Municipal Council took the decision following the submission of a petition signed by more than 100 people, which branded the shops unhygienic and dangerous, reported The Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

"These types of shops shouldn't have been allowed in residential areas in the first place because they don't constitute normal services as required by residents," said council chairman Ahmed Al Ansari.

"People don't tend to buy cement or paint every day, people need laundrettes, cold stores and hairdressers," he stated.

"Also, if these building materials shops are nearby restaurants and grocers then the chemicals present could pose a health risk," he added.

Al Ansari said that ban would not affect existing shops, but would instead prevent new ones from opening.

"The people who run these shops block the road with bags of cement and paint buckets, while storing highly flammable substances on site," he said.

'If gas cylinders are nearby then this is a ticking bomb just waiting to explode. It is an unnecessary situation that we have to deal with, but it could be averted with nationwide implementation," stated the official.

"It is no good just banning them in Southern, while they can go to other residential areas in Bahrain's four other governorates," he added.

Last month, the Southern Municipal Council approved a ban on gas refilling shops operating in residential neighbourhoods after these too were described as 'time bombs'.-TradeArabia News Service
