SEWAGE TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION

Bouygues, Urbacon .. to construct two sewage tunnels in the Qatari capital.

Bouygues, Urbacon win $617m Qatar contracts

DOHA, October 1, 2015

Bouygues Construction and UrbaCon Trading & Contracting have jointly won contracts worth QR2.25 billion ($617 million) from Qatar Public Works Authority (Ashghal) for the design and construction of sewage tunnels in Doha.

These contracts are part of the strategic project for sewage collection, pumping and treatment services in the south of Doha, known as “Idris” (Inner Doha Resewerage Implementation Strategy), stated Bouygues Travaux Publics, the French company's subsidiary which has been awarded the project.

In partnership with the local contractor UrbaCon Trading & Contracting, Bouygues Travaux Publics will construct two sewage tunnels in the Qatari capital. The north section (MTS01) will be 16 km long and 3 m wide, while the south section (MTS03) will be 14 km long and 4.5 m wide.

Of the two contracts, Bouygues Travaux Publics’ share will be roughly QR1.16 billion ($318 million), the global construction major stated.

Jean-Philippe Trin, Deputy CEO with responsibility for Bouygues Travaux Publics, DTP and VSL, said: “We are proud to have been chosen by the Qatar Public Works Authority. For this ambitious project, we have developed an innovative technical solution that will enable us to address the customer’s concerns effectively and fully meet their expectations.”

The Idris project handover is scheduled for 2019.

In recent years, the Qatari capital has experienced sustained population growth, which has necessitated the redesign and expansion of its sewage system.

On this basis, Ashghal decided to put in place a modern sewer network made up of large networks of underground collection systems, said the construction major.

It has been designed according to the principles of sustainable development, making use of gravity to ensure the flow of wastewater in the tunnels, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
