Qatar announces launch of $825m labour city

Qatar has announced the official launch of its $825-million Labour City, the country's largest workers' accommodation facility that can house nearly 70,000 workers at Musaismeer near the industrial zone, said a report.

The facility, built over an area of 1,100 sq m at Musaismeer near the industrial zone, also contains retail outlets, two police stations and Qatar’s second largest mosque, according to Qatar News Agency.

The Labor City was unveiled by Prime Minister Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani and the Labor Minister Abdullah Al-Khulaifi at a grand ceremony held in the capital Doha.

The site is currently around 60 per cent full and houses workers from various countries including Nepal, India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

The Labour City is just at a distance of 14 km from Doha Centre and 13 km from the Hamad International Airport. The Special Engineering Office oversaw its completion and implementation over almost three years.

Built over an area of 1,100.000 square meters, the new Labor City accommodates 100,000 workers and is considered as a human and cultural model, which provides a suitable environment, security and safety, care and recreation areas, reflecting the concern of the State to provide services for residents and develop the individual and the community.

The Labour City is divided into two parts: the entertainment and business district, which includes a commercial center and a market with 200 shops fitting the tastes and cultures of its inhabitants, a cricket ground, the largest in Qatar and designed in conformity with international specifications and standards, a theater accommodating 17,000 people in addition to four modern cinema halls, stated the report.

The second section of the City hosts the residential complexes for workers and has been built in accordance with international standards and contains 55 residential buildings with a capacity of 100,000 workers, places of worship, a medical clinic and parking lot for buses, it added.
