Empower, the world’s largest district cooling services provider, recently participated in the Rapid Assessment of Indian Cities for District Cooling program which is part of the District Energy in Cities Initiative, launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep).

The move comes on the heels of Empower being selected by Unep as a partner of this global initiative.

Empower visited India to assess Pune and Coimbatore and share its global experience with the decision makers in these cities. The delegation from Empower attended the assessment along with partners from Unep.

As part of the assessment, the team met officials from Pune and Coimbatore city councils, analysed infrastructure level, and discussed requirements for district energy in these cities. The team also collected data required for effective implementation of district energy.

“During this rapid assessment, our technical experts worked with both officials from cities to identify potential for DC as well as barriers. We are happy to be referred by the Unep to such high potential Indian cities,” said Ahmad Bin Shafar, chief executive officer of Empower. “We are keen to share our international experience with these Indian cities as part of our objective of spreading district cooling technology around the world.

"We firmly believe in the potential of cities transitioning to DC. Our involvement in this program supports global transformation efforts to have the transition from the heating and cooling sector to low-carbon DC and raise awareness of energy efficient solutions," Bin Shafar added.

“Our team outlined the requirements for developing an advanced district cooling systems in selected Indian cities as Phase 1. The effort will be repeated in more cities in African and Latin American countries, as planned by the project team,” added Bin Shafar.

During the assessment, Empower put on display the most advanced technologies of district cooling, highlighting its benefits, competencies, sustainable factors, and ideal operational plans. The company showcased case studies from its projects in Dubai, to help these cities implement the latest advancements in the industry.

“As a follow-up to this visit, we will send another delegation to other Indian cities in coming months for a project study. This demonstrates Unep's trust and the success of our Pune and Coimbatore visit,” said Bin Shafar.
