RTA completes key Dubai road project work

DUBAI, February 23, 2016

Dubai's Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) said work on widening a 7-km-long section of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Project has been completed and the road will open for traffic on Friday (February 26).

With the completion of the project, the number of lanes will double from three to six in each direction alongside this 7-km-long sector extending from Al Maktoum International Airport roundabout to Jebel Ali-Lehbab roundabout.

Announcing the progress on the RTA's other projects, Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and board chairman, said about 60 per cent of the job had been completed in Al Houdh Junction project between the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Yalayis Road.

The project, which was undertaken by the RTA at a cost of Dh227 million ($62 million), is set for completion in the fourth quarter this year.

Al Houdh Junction, which is situatedin the western part of the Dubai bordering the Arabian Ranches Interchange to the north and the Trucks Road to the south, is one of the key strategic projects on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, said Al Tayer.

It encompasses upgrading the existing Al Houdh roundabout from a signallised junction into a free flyover accommodating the track of Etihad Rail.

The project also encompasses the widening of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in an 11 km-long sector extending from Al Houdh roundabout to the junction leading to Al Maktoum International Airport from three to six lanes in each direction.

When completed, Al Houdh Junction Project will ease the overlapping traffic in the existing roundabout, and ensure a smooth vehicular movement in various directions.

Al Houdh Junction Project is part of Phase Two of the Improvement and Widening of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Project costing about Dh940 million ($256 million).

In Phase Two, the RTA accomplished the construction of a flyover linking Hessa Road, Al Khail Road and Al Barsha area with the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

This vital junction serves the traffic movement from and to Al Barsha community through the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and provides seamless traffic movement in all directions besides serving communities under development near the junction, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
