Ashghal projects win key GSAS design certifications

DOHA, April 20, 2016

Qatar's Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said majority of its projects had been awarded the three-stars Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) certification in design and construction.

The certification was a result of its fruitful co-operation with the Gulf Organization for Research and Development Group (GORD), said a statement from Ashghal.

This represents the keenness of both parties to implement the GSAS standards in all the public buildings in Qatar, specifically in educational buildings including schools and kindergartens and health buildings, like primary healthcare centres and hospitals, in addition to Awqaf and mosques projects, it stated.

This co-operation also aims to support the achievement of Qatar National Vision 2030 to promote sustainability standards in the urban environment in the country, it added.

Announcing the key achievement, Nasser bin Ali Al Mawlawi, the president of Ashghal, said: "We are proud of this feat and it takes real commitment to the GSAS standards to achieve the three-stars certificate in the design and construction."

"This would lead us to build public, educational and health buildings that would be leading examples of sustainable buildings locally and globally in accordance with the global criteria for evaluating sustainability," he stated.

Almost 100 projects being implemented by Ashghal, with a total area of more than half a million sq m, will be evaluated by GSAS on the level of performance equivalent to 3-star, said Al Mawlawi.

Of this, 43 projects are in the education sector (schools and kindergartens), while 19 are in the healthcare sector (hospitals).

A total of 23 school projects have been completed whilst 20 are undergoing design and construction, he added. In the healthcare sector, four of the hospital projects have been completed, while 15 are in the design and construction phase.

Dr Yousef Mohammad Al Horr, the chairman of the GORD, said: "We are proud to collaborate with the Ashghal to drive forward sustainability development in the construction industry in Qatar and to accomplish this achievement in the field of public, educational and health buildings for the first time in the Middle East."

"This achievement will support the Qatar National Vision 2030, and will shape our vision of a healthy and sustainable environment for the citizens and residents of the State of Qatar," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
