Riyadh transport project work on track

RIYADH, May 5, 2016

The $22.5-billion Riyadh Public Transport Project (RPTP) is on track and moving ahead well, the  city's governor has been quoted as saying.

The project includes construction of a metro, a bus system and other transport services in the Saudi capital. The metro's six lines will cover 176 km, supported by a bus network of 1,150 km.

"The project is going very well" and according to plan, Prince Faisal bin Bandar said on the sidelines of a ceremony to mark the end of excavation works involved on the underground railway tunnel, an AFP report said.

Construction on the Riyadh Metro began in late 2013 and is targeted for completion by the end of 2018. It is the biggest infrastructure project in the history of the Saudi capital, the report added.

Three foreign consortiums are building the metro, with France's Alstom, Canada's Bombardier and Germany's Siemens among the major participants.
