Bahrain awards $55m construction tenders in Q1

MANAMA, May 9, 2016

Bahrain has awarded 12 tenders worth BD21.05 million ($55.3 million) in the first quarter of 2016, and invited bids for 17 others worth BD101 million ($266 million) for projects related to roads, sanitary work and infrastructure upgradation.

These projects underline the Bahrain government’s determination to invest in infrastructure projects to provide a better life for its citizens besides supporting the economy and attracting more investments into the kingdom, stated Minister of Works, Municipality Affairs and Urban Planning Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf.

The Bahraini leadership gives priority to awarding tenders to local companies to revive the private sector and enhance local economy, he noted.

The tenders in the roads sector covered a term contract for the paving and re-paving of roads (2016-2018) and all other related works in different locations in Bahrain for a period of two years, pre- and post- consulting services for North Manama Causeway (Phase Two) and the causeway connecting to Busaiteen, said Khalaf.

The project work involves preparation of detailed feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed designs for the project besides assisting in tendering procedures and supervising implementation of the project, he stated.

Another project is the revamp of Jasra Interchange (Phase One), which consists of creating a new additional curve and roads along Sheikh Isa bin Salman Highway extending 1,400 m, dredging works, asphalt paving, creating pedestrian crossings, streamlining the road system, protecting service facilities, signage, lighting and other related works, said the minister.

The sanitary sector covered the expansion of Tubli plant, to increase its capacity from 200,000 cu m to 400,000 cu m per day to accommodate present and future sewage flows.

Another project in this segment is the storm water drainage scheme in Muharraq and the Capital Governorate - Package 3A. It comprises construction of storm water drainage connections extending 3,805 m, constructing 35 inspection chambers, 28 storm water collection chambers and 239 water collection points. The project serves 10 blocks in Muharraq and the capital, stated Al Khalaf.

According to him, the project involved the construction of 6.1-km-long main connections and 2.9-km-long sub-connections, a lifting station and 622 inspection chambers and connecting 364 houses to the network to benefit residents of Block 733 in Nasfah and Block 743 in Sanad.

Other projects include the upgrade of D, F and R sewerage networks (Phase Six) comprising connections extending 9 km in different areas, stated the minister.

This is aimed at prolonging the life cycles of the sewerage networks and reducing ground water leakage to the network, thus alleviating pressure on sewage treatment plants, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
