Dewa issues tenders for 3D-printed labs at solar park

DUBAI, May 23, 2016

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has invited expression of interest (EOI) for the construction of 3D-printed laboratories at its ambitious Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, UAE.

The new labs will be used for conducting research on drones and 3D-printing technologies at the solar park which will generate 1,000 megawatts (MW) by 2020 and 5,000 MW by 2030, said the state news agency Wam.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, said to be the largest single-site project in the world, will feature the new lab, build with 3D-printing technology, under the umbrella of the Research and Development (R&D) Centre.

The labs will conduct research on the use of drones to develop the performance of photovoltaic panels to increase their efficiency, credibility, and lower their cost, as well as study and test different photovoltaic technologies, stated the report.

Dewa has been using drones for the last three years to monitor its electricity and water production, transmission and distribution systems.

The test labs will be constructed using 3D-printing technology. The four main labs include the electronics, software, mechanical and the prototype laboratory. The project will also include an outdoor-testing facility, it added.
