RTA highlights green economy achievements at Wetex

DUBAI, October 4, 2016

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is showcasing its green economy achievements at the 18th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (Wetex) 2016 which opened in Dubai, UAE, today.

The three-day exhibition, which runs till October 6 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, is being held under the theme 'Leadership in Sustainability'.

The annual event, being organised by Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, will see the participation of the biggest international businesses who will display the latest technologies of water, energy and environment worldwide.

Nasser Hamad Bu Shehab, the chief executive of RTA's Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector and chairman of RTA’s Energy & Green Economy Committee, said: "Through its agencies and sectors, RTA assigns paramount importance to energy, water, environment, health and safety."

"Such attention is in line with its achievements in various projects and strategic initiatives. It contributes to fostering green and sustainable environment conforming to the plans of the UAE and Dubai as well as the highest international standards," he stated.

According to him, Wetex offers a platform for RTA to showcase its initiatives and strategic plans to nurture green and sustainable environment.

"To further promote this drive, RTA always seeks to improve water and energy efficiency in its own premises, transit modes and service delivery outlets,” he noted.

Bu Shehab pointed out that during the past three years, RTA had completed 45 projects and initiatives relating to energy and green economy besides establishing the Green Economy Section under direct supervisions of Safety, Risk, Regulation and Planning Department, as a reference for documenting all green projects and initiatives across RTA .

It has adopted the world's best standards in green buildings and is planning to obtain Leed (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in Route 2020 Project, which will soon start. It also seeks to replace traditional streetlighting by LED (light emitting diode) lights by 2030, he stated.

“We are well aware that the green economy plays a key role in nurturing a secure and sustainable future for humanity. Proliferating this concept among all sectors to enjoy its benefits depends largely on a number of factors," remarked Bu Shehab.

"The UAE puts assiduous effort to turn this concept into reality in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Program and a number of United Nations specialised agencies,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
