EmiratesGBC marks 10 years of green building excellence

DUBAI, October 5, 2016

Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC), an independent forum aimed at conserving the environment by strengthening and promoting green building practices, is celebrating 10 years of its success as an integral partner in achieving the ‘green vision’ of the UAE.

Formed with the goal of advancing green building principles that help protect the environment and foster sustainability, EmiratesGBC has closely aligned itself with critical sustainability road maps of the UAE National Agenda 2021, the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy and Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030.

With over 150 corporate members, EmiratesGBC has made deep inroads into the construction and retrofitting sectors by offering professional training and workshops.

A special ceremony was recently held at the Tawasull Ballroom, Hotel Pullman Dubai Creek City Centre to commemorate the occasion in the presence of co-founders Habiba Al Marashi and Dr Sadek Owainati and its chairman Saeed Al Abbar and other council members.

The anniversary celebration was supported by the event’s main sponsor Majid Al Futtaim, a founding member of the council since 2006. The event was sponsored by EmiratesGBC’s long standing and active corporate members, Legrand, Jotun and WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff.

Dr Owainati recalled how EmiratesGBC had played an instrumental role in introducing noticeable changes to the UAE’s construction industry and still continues to serve as a hub for promoting principles of green buildings.

He also shared how the council has had far-reaching impact beyond the UAE in driving Green Building Councils throughout the Middle East.

In 2010, EmiratesGBC led the formation of the Mena Network of Green Building Councils, under the umbrella of WorldGBC.

The council has also released three ground-breaking industry reports – ‘EmiratesGBC Technical Guidelines for Retrofitting Buildings’, ‘The EmiratesGBC Energy Efficiency program’ and ‘Energy & Water Benchmarking for UAE Hotels’.-TradeArabia News Service
