Kone seals big Qatar light rail order

DOHA, October 17, 2016

Kone, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, said it has won an order for 139 elevators, escalators and autowalks from Qatar Rail to be installed at the Lusail Light Rail Transit system.

Developed by Qatar Rail, the Lusail Light Rail Transit network will comprise 10km of underground track, four main tram lines, of ground level and elevated tracks and  passenger stations.

The new sustainable transport system, currently under construction in the new city of Lusail, north of capital Doha, is expected to accommodate the 250,000 inhabitants and also serve around 40,000 daily visitors.

In the near future, the rail network will connect to Doha’s metro network at a network interchange located on Khor highway.

The Lusail Light Rail Transit System is being designed by architecture firm Atkins and built by QDVC (Qatari Diar Vinci Construction Grands projects Company).

On the contract win, Mark Bayyari, the managing director for Qatar, said: "We are extremely honoured to have won this project. With our solid understanding of the passenger requirements in the public transport sector and our eco-efficient equipment, we look forward to ensuring a smooth and seamless transit experience for the commuters."

To ensure accessibility and seamless transfer for the passengers through the stations, the Kone equipment will include 49 elevators, 82 escalators and eight horizontal autowalks, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
