UAE tile market set for growth amid Expo 2020 boom

DUBAI, May 24, 2017

The UAE's tile market is poised for solid growth mainly driven by the construction activities linked to the Dubai Expo 2020, said an industry expert, citing a report.

In the UAE, demand for tiles is predicted to grow by 12 per cent, thanks to the ongoing hotel and tourism projects, which currently amount to a pipeline valued at $8.1 billion to 2020, according to the 2015 Frost and Sullivan report, Tiles and Ceramics Market Assessing Growth Trends and New Opportunities in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The UAE’s continued construction boom ahead of Expo 2020, has driven demand for ceramic tiles to increase by almost 70 per cent, said the expert.

With almost 40 per cent of tiles imported from overseas, this poses huge opportunities for international manufacturers to win contracts on prestigious UAE projects, said the experts ahead of a major industry event in the Indian state of Gujarat.

As the largest exporter of tiles to the UAE, India is well positioned to build on its already strong business ties with the country and, between November 14 to 19, buyers from the UAE will have the chance to visit the second largest manufacturer of tiles in the world at the Vibrant Ceramics Expo and Summit 2017.

An initiative of Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the exhibition will be held in Indian cities of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad, with business leaders from the booming local ceramic industry welcoming a delegation of buyers from the UAE.

The hosted programme will offer three nights’ accommodation, meals, local transportation and a helicopter tour of the factory for international delegates, said the organisers.

It is the latest in a series of trade partnerships between the two countries, which are expected to achieve trade exchanges worth $100 billion by 2020.

In January 2017, 14 strategic partnerships were signed for transport, energy, shipping and trade, between Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The high-profile event is being organised in association with the Morbi Ceramics Associations.

Spread over 50,000 sq m area, the expo will host more than 250 exhibitors, over 400 brands and thousands of sizes and designs under one roof, with offerings to outshine the value of china and the style of Italy.

Gujarat happens to be world’s second largest tile manufacturing zone. The Indian ceramic tile industry is estimated to be of ₹240 billion ($3.7 billion), of which 40 per cent has been organized and 60 per cent has been unorganized.

Gujarat is leading the tile production industry by a significant margin, with the cumulative investment in Gujarat alone currently standing at ₹80 billion ($1.2 billion).

CEO of Vibrant Ceramics Expo and Summit 2017 Sandip Patel said: "The exhibition will showcase the latest technology, ceramic tiles, sanitary-ware and bath-fittings, while technology transfer, investment, joint ventures and networking will be key highlights at the conference."

"Vibrant Ceramics is one-of-a-kind initiative that aims to unify the key players in the ceramics industry. We hope to get great participation from UAE, as it is our first step towards a fruitful association with UAE," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
