Kuwait awards workers' cities project contract

Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP), in collaboration with Kuwait Municipality, has awarded  contracts to five major consortia led by leading regional players in the construction sector for the development of workers' city in South Jahra region, said a report.

The selected ones for the South Jahra Labour City project include Agility Public Warehousing Company consortium comprising National Industries Group and National Real Estate Company; the Al Mazaya Company consortium comprising Kuwait Investment Company, Tariq Al Ghanim and United Real Estate Company (URC) and also the China State Construction Engineering Corporation consortium comprising Fouad Al Ghanim and Sons and the Kuwait Financial Center (Markaz), according to state news agency Kuna.

The KAPP said it had invited bids from companies and consortia for the construction of the workers' city project through Kuwait's official gazette last May, stated the report.

The 1,015,000-sq-m South Jahra Labour City, which is set to be developed under a build, operate, and transfer (BOT) scheme, will provide adequate and affordable housing for 20,000 expatriate workers, said the KAPP in its website.

The project will incorporate all aspects of security, health, entertainment while maintaining consistency with the cultures and traditions of this considerable category in Kuwaiti society, it added.

Following the revision of qualification applications of participating companies and consortia, five of the consortias have been approved for the project, it added.
