Bahrain starts work on avenue expansion

MANAMA, May 28, 2018

Work has started on the Nasser bin Jabr Al Jabr Avenue Expansion project in the Seef area of the kingdom which will see the construction of an additional lane on the southern side to ease the traffic congestion resulting from new commercial development in the area.

This comes in line with directives by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister to develop urgent solutions to ease traffic flow across the kingdom, reported the BNA.

Huda Abdullah Fakhro, the assistant undersecretary for roads at the Ministry of Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, said the scope of work includes the construction of an additional lane on the southern side for incoming traffic moving from Road 40 towards King Abdallah II bin Al Hussein Street.

It also includes the construction of a rainwater drainage network, provision of sidewalks for pedestrians, lighting works, new traffic signs and the installation of safety barriers, she stated.

The expansion of the avenue will help to ease traffic congestion that has resulted from new commercial development in Seef area.

Fakhro said the avenue currently serves more than 20,000 vehicles per day for east-bound traffic and 10,000 vehicles per day moving west.

More than 3,000 vehicles use the avenue each hour during peak periods, increasing to 5,100 vehicles per hour in the afternoon and to more than 5,800 vehicles per hour in the evening, she stated.

According to her, the expansion will increase the capacity of the street entrance from Road 40 to 2,000 vehicles per hour, reducing waiting times at the intersection of Seef Bridge.

The work is part of a short-term $1.2-billion plan to expand road networks, funded by the Gulf Development Programme, that is expected to take place over three to five years, she added.
