Professor Porter to lecture in Bahrain
Manama, December 19, 2008
Professor Michael E Porter, the world’s undisputed expert on global competitiveness, and the foremost business strategist in the world, will make his first ever-public presentation in Bahrain next month.
Governments and corporations around the world have turned to Professor Porter for his perspective on economic development, and he will share his insights with a Gulf audience in an exclusive event on January 26, 2009 in Manama.
He is the fifth thought leader to be brought to the Kingdom by international event organisers Global Leaders.
On the eve of the recent US elections – and as the country suffered the onslaught of its economic crisis – Professor Porter gave a clear warning to the government that it was not acting in America’s long-term interests.
“The stark truth is that the US has no long-term economic strategy - no coherent set of policies to ensure competitiveness over the long haul,” he said in an interview.
“Strategy embodies clear priorities, based on understanding the strengths we need to preserve and the weaknesses that threaten our prosperity the most. In dealing with a crisis, experience teaches us that steps to address the immediate problem must support a long-term strategy.
“Yet it is far from clear that we are taking the steps most important to America's long-term economic prosperity. Government leaders react to current events piecemeal, rather than developing a strategy that unfolds over years.”
Professor Porter chairs the Global Competitiveness Report, an annual ranking of the competitiveness and growth prospects of more than 120 countries published by the World Economic Forum. His work is taught at almost every business school in the world.
He is the leading authority on competitive strategy, the competitiveness and economic development of nations, states, and regions, and the application of competitive principles to social problems such as healthcare, the environment, and corporate responsibility.
Serving as the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, based at Harvard Business School (the highest professional recognition that can be awarded to a Harvard faculty member), Professor Porter was also elected to the Princeton University Board of Trustees earlier this year, for a four-year term.
“All MBA students will remember the first time they learned of Professor Porter’s work: it was a defining moment. Year after year, through his work on the Global Competitiveness Report, he has remained the most relevant of all business strategists,” president of Global Leaders Tina Schneidermann.
“Professor Porter’s presentations are full of case studies and regional insights. As we enter 2009 in the middle of a worsening global economic crisis, we should all look up and take note. His direction in these complex economic times is unrivalled, and he is better placed than anyone to guide us through the year ahead.” – TradeArabia News Service
