UAE non-oil exports surge to $18 billion in 2009

The United Arab Emirates' non-oil exports rose to Dh66 billion ($17.97 billion) in 2009, from Dh60 billion the previous year, state news agency WAM reported on Saturday.

The non-oil imports fell 21 per cent to Dh449.2 billion in 2009, WAM said, quoting the head of the UAE's Federal Customs Authority.

In total, the non-oil foreign trade volume of the world's third-largest oil exporter and Opec member fell 16 per cent to Dh663 billion.

The figure includes re-exported goods worth Dh147.8 billion in 2009, a nine per cent decline compared to the previous year. The UAE ministry of economics has yet to publish 2009 trade figures.-Reuters
