EIAST appoints project scientist
Dubai

Professor Hamid M K Al-Naimiy

The Emirates Institution for Advanced Science & Technology (EIAST) has appointed a new project scientist for the UAE National Astronomical Observatory and Telescope project.

Professor Hamid M K Al-Naimiy, dean of the College of Sciences at the University of Sharjah (UOS), who is also President of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, will lead the formulation of the User Requirement Statement including science, educational and tourism requirements.

The appointment comes in line with the MoU signed with UOS to exchange technical and human resources expertise.

Professor Al-Naimiy will also oversee the general goals and areas of activity of the observatory and its various component including telescopes, instrumentations, planetarium and their use.

He will represent the project team in liaison with the astronomy, space sciences and amateur astronomical community in the UAE, and play an active advisory role in the execution of the project up to its completion.

The UAE National Astronomical Observatory and Telescope project is aimed at improving science and astronomical infrastructure, scientific knowledge transfer to the UAE nationals, and raising public awareness and enthusiasm for astronomy as well as promote tourism.

Professor Al-Naimiy will give guidance and advice in choosing and testing the best location for the observatory and telescope, and will participate in drafting proposal requests (RFPs) and evaluating proposals.

“Professor Hamid M K Al-Naimiy has extensive experience in the field of astronomy and he will ensure the successful and optimal development and implementation of a world-class facility that will greatly contribute to creating interest amongst the community in astronomy, astrophysics and space science,” said Ahmed Al Mansoori, director general and vice chair of the board of directors, EIAST.

“This will strengthen the astronomy base in the UAE, enable regional and international joint astronomical research projects and also advance tourism sector along with increased public awareness on astronomy and space sciences,” he added.

Professor Al-Naimiy will work closely with EIAST’s project manager and other technical staff as a member of the multifunctional team. He will recommend the appointment of scientists and engineers for the implementation phase and will also formulate a full training programme for nationals. – TradeArabia News Services
