Bahrain fund raises $207m in labour fees

Manama, April 24, 2010

Tamkeen, Bahrain’s labour fund, generated BD78 million ($206.8 million) in labour fees on businesses employing expatriate workers in 2009.

Private sector support director Mohammed Bucheeri said 80 per cent of the fees go to Tamkeen to be used in projects and programmes, including development of Bahraini workers and supporting private establishments.

Tamkeen contributed BD13 million to the insurance against unemployment scheme on behalf of the private sector and invested BD100 million in more than 50 projects to benefit more than 20,000 Bahrainis and 5,700 institutions, said Bucheeri.

Long-term opportunities are available to train more than 35,000 school and university students, including PhD holders, with the aim to replace expatriate labour force, he added. – TradeArabia News Service
