Bahraini students take part in model UN conference

MANAMA, April 3, 2015

A delegation of Bahraini students have taken part in a Model United Nations conference in New York.

The annual National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference hosted more than 5,000 students from across the world, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

It was Bahrain's seventh participation in the international event with three university students who were accompanied by Bahrain Universities Model United Nations (BUMUN) director and founder Doris Martin.

"We go for the awareness on global issues for students," Martin told the GDN.

"We want them to become good global citizens by looking at a different calibre of diplomats from different universities.

"It also teaches life and debate skills that you don't get from university.

"On top of that, having a great delegation promotes Bahrain and the youth programmes we have here in the country.

"We're going to try and have a bid to host a Middle East NMUN in Bahrain in 2017."

The delegation was made up of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain students Huda Al Zeera and Mohammed Toorani and Royal University for Women student Seham Yateem.

"The way the students are chosen is through those who got diplomacy awards at last year's BUMUN," said Martin.

"They have to be Bahraini because it's sponsored by the General Organisation for Youth and Sport. They also become chairs in BUMUN 2015.

"At NMUN, we were representing the Marshall Islands this year, and each of them was in a different GA.

"We're proud to announce that BUMUN bagged the Honourable Mention Award."

Al Zeera told the GDN she gained vital exposure and experience from the conference.

"It was a great experience, especially the closing ceremony in the UN headquarters," she said.

"We had three topics to prepare for, but in the conference my committee covered one, which was women in development.

"It was an important topic for me because I believe in equality for women, more importantly in the developing world than developed." - TradeArabia News Service
