Flexibility in work ‘priority for millennials’

DUBAI, May 21, 2017

Young people are craving jobs with greater flexibility and the ability to experience working in multiple regions and countries, according to new research from International Youth Foundation, in partnership with Hilton.

Enhanced internships and apprenticeships, and the option to volunteer or work towards a mission, are among the most sought after attributes of a role, the survey of people aged 16-24 found. Nearly one in five (17 per cent) young people surveyed are considering hospitality as a top three career choice.

Key findings:

•    More than half (56 per cent) of survey participants worldwide look for flexible work hours and work/life balance

•    One in three (33 per cent) seek the flexibility to move to different regions and countries

•    Nearly half (40 per cent) are unhappy with opportunities for internships and apprenticeships as part of their education

•    More than a quarter (27 per cent) are swayed by a job which includes the ability to volunteer or work towards a mission

Koray Genckul, senior director, HR, Middle East, Africa & Turkey, Hilton, said: “Young people want more than just a traditional job – whether it is international career expansion opportunities, world class training programmes or volunteering towards a wider social and environmental cause.

“There is a global crisis of youth unemployment and we are committed to highlighting the opportunities in hospitality. Careers@Hilton Week events are a unique opportunity for Hilton to inspire job seekers about careers in the hospitality industry, and to support them by providing guidance on the skills that are vital to succeed in the workplace and beyond.”

Marharita Havrylina, sales coordinator, Hilton Garden Inn Mall of the Emirates, said: “Joining Hilton as an intern, my first experience of work in the hospitality industry was as a Front Office Management Trainee at Hilton Garden Inn Mall of the Emirates. This was a great start to my career, as it gave me practical knowledge that I couldn’t get from lectures at school. The experience of dealing with guests and colleagues gave me a good understanding of what hospitality is all about.”

“The Hilton internship allowed me to gain experience in a number of front office roles, and inspired me to develop my career in the hospitality industry. Since then, I have started working in sales and I am really enjoying it – the journey from meeting a new client to winning the lead excites me and encourages me to be creative,” she added.

With a clear strategy developed to attract and retain talent, Hilton UAE has held the title of a “Great Place to Work,” for two consecutive years, and was named one of the “World’s 25 Best Multinational Workplaces” in 2016.

Sherif Aboul-Nasr, duty manager of Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort, said: “I have always been intrigued about how hotels operate and what keeps their customers happy. Now that I work at a hotel, I have come to realize how important it is to me to make a difference to someone’s stay. I get a sense of joy and satisfaction knowing that I am part of a team that puts a smile on the faces of our guests.”

Over the past week (May 15-21) Hilton held Careers@Hilton Week, an annual global career event showcasing the many opportunities available in the hospitality industry for young people and other job seekers. Hilton hotels and corporate offices around the globe hosted hundreds of events to inspire young people about the exciting and diverse career opportunities in the hospitality industry. The Careers@Hilton Week events in the UAE included back stage hotel tours, practical skill master-classes and a Summer Internship fair, as well as presentations from current Team Members about their career paths in hospitality.

This initiative is part of Hilton’s Open Doors commitment, which aims to positively impact at least one million young people by 2019 by connecting them to opportunities in the hospitality industry, preparing them to reach their full potential or directly employing them. – TradeArabia News Service
