UC Berkeley to set up innovation hub in Oman

MUSCAT, September 30, 2019

The University City (Oman University and Science and Technology City) has signed an agreement with the University of California, Berkeley to establish the first regional UC Berkeley-powered innovation hub in the Sultanate, a media report said.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Dr Rawya bint Saud al Busaidiyah, Minister of Higher Education and the chairperson of the Executive Committee of the University City Project, and Carol Christ, the Chancellor of UC Berkeley, reported Oman Observer.

The MoU aims to attract world-class universities and research centres to Oman, and establish a training centre focused on artificial intelligence (AI).

The hub will provide incubation and acceleration opportunities for start-ups and provide upskilling programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, critical thinking, intrapreneurship and innovation.

Some of the programmes to be delivered by the centre will grant academic credits that may be counted towards earning academic degrees, the report said.
