Dubai healthcare group to invest $200m in India

New Delhi, January 10, 2010

Gulf-based healthcare tycoon Dr Azad Moopen is set to invest over Rs10 billion ($200 million) for setting up hospitals and eye-care centres across India, including his home state of Kerala, said a report.

'There is a huge opportunity in India, which will become one of the major powers in 25 years,' Dr Moopen, the chairman of the Dubai-based Dr Moopen group and the Kozhikode-based Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences, said in an interview to the Economic Times.

A renowned physician turned entrepreneur, Dr Moopen was in New Delhi to receive India’s top most honour for overseas Indians. 'Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award' from President Partibha Patil.

The award is given by Government of India in conjunction with the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, to honour exceptional and meritorious contribution of overseas Indians in their chosen field/profession.

'I consider this award as a reward for whatever little I have been able to contribute in the area of healthcare and to alleviate the suffering of the needy people,” said an elated Dr Moopen.

'There is a big role for the healthcare sector to fill up the need for quality healthcare at an affordable price which we are committed in delivering through the largest network of healthcare delivery points across the GCC & India,' he added.

Dr Moopen said investing in India was the best possible thing he could do for his country and had plans for the entire spectrum of medical treatment, except primary healthcare.

'We have already started the Medicity project in 40 acres of land in Kochi. It is a $100 million project and will be completed in three years,' Dr Moopen added.

'Two eye care centres will also be set up in Noida and Faridabad in two months. We are also investing in Kolhapur, Pune and Bangalore,' said Moopen, while speaking about his plans in India.

'We are in primary care in the Gulf,' said Moopen, whose DM group today operates in four GCC states and is planning to expand operations in Saudi Arabia.

From his first clinic in Dubai that started in 1987 with only two doctors his group now boasts of 70 clinics and pharmacies in the region, including the 60-bed Medcare Hospital and the 20-bed Al Rafa Hospital for Maternity and Surgery, both in Dubai.

Dr. Moopen’s Healthcare Management Services was formed in Dubai to further the concept of branded clinics, pharmacies and hospitals as Medcentre, Medshop and Medcare across GCC.

The group today treats over two million patients a year across a cross-section of society in Gulf Countries and India, Dr Moopen explained.

'As part of the Group’s corporate social responsibility, we regularly conduct lot of awareness campaigns and extend free medical care to thousands of poor patients in India and GCC. Soon we will be launching a Diabetes management programme in a big way” he added.
