RAK concludes health and nutrition campaign

Ras Al Khaimah, February 22, 2011

Ras Al Khaimah marked the conclusion of its one-year long health and nutrition awareness campaign with a ceremony.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud, Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, presented awards to organisations and sponsors who participated in the campaign and winners in the various competitions organised as part of the awareness drive.

The year long campaign with the slogan 'The Secret of my Success lies in my Food' aimed to wean children away from junk foods and motivate them to adopt healthy eating habits through awareness programmes, lectures, competitions and various school events.

Dr Mohammed Ibrahim Mansoor, president of the RAK Parents Council, said that the campaign has succeeded in spreading awareness among students, parents and school authorities about the importance of adopting healthy eating habits.

'As part of the campaign, a committee comprising officials from RAK Municipality, Ministry of Health and RAK Parents Council visited all the school cafeterias in the emirate and has submitted an evaluation report on the quality and nutritional value of the food being served there.'

He said that based on the recommendations of the committee, it has been decided to set up model cafeterias in selected schools to make available healthier food choices to children at reasonable prices.

Dr Mohammed Mansoor noted that instilling healthy eating habit at an early age was of vital importance as there was rapid rise in diabetes and obesity- related health issues even among the country's youth.

The function included stage performances by students highlighting the importance of having a balanced diet along with a poetry recital by poet Rashid Sharar.-TradeArabia News Service
