Dubai hospital launches ‘transitional care’ unit
Dubai, October 24, 2011
The American Hospital Dubai has extended its patient services with the launch of a new Transitional Care Unit (TCU) to offer an alternative for families seeking specialist, multidisciplinary care for their loved ones.
The TCU unit provides an option when home care is no longer sustainable or when both home carers and patients need a respite period. It is believed to be the first private healthcare unit of its kind in the UAE, a statement from the hospital said.
Long-term care for geriatric patients is one of the most demanding forms of care, in which the patient may be suffering from a wide range of debilitating physical and mental, chronic and acute conditions, from delirium to depression and behavioural symptoms, frailty which may lead to falls, malnutrition or weight loss, infections and pressure ulcers in bed-ridden patients.
With such a broad spectrum of potential medical conditions and with the added emotion of moving from the family home, these patients need the very special care and attention that only a dedicated team can provide to support both the patient and family.
The TCU at the hospital puts an emphasis on the physical and mental wellbeing of patients, and incorporates all the latest technology and facilities used in providing state of the art long term care for patients, in an environment and surroundings that provide comfort and reassurance for senior patients and their families, in spacious private rooms and suites with attractive views, the statement said.
Dr Senthil Meenrajan, consultant geriatrics / internal medicine, American Hospital Dubai, said: “When older loved ones (and patients of any age with a debilitating condition) reach the stage that they need the kind of long term care beyond the means of care givers at home, the family wants to be sure that they are in the hands of a specialist team of professional care providers, operating to the highest standard of healthcare delivery in an accredited institution.”
“We are very pleased to add this important new unit to our expanding Dubai campus and believe it is the first of its kind in the UAE. The new TCU unit will provide sustained, consistently high levels of specialist expertise in one of the most demanding areas of patient care, and in a very high quality environment,” Meenrajan added.
The American hospital’s multidisciplinary team of specialists focuses on the needs of the patient and delivers holistic care programs, long term.
The team includes physicians, nurses, physical therapists, speech/swallow therapist, dieticians and pharmacists, delivering a high level of professional, intensive care and comprehensive range of services that TCU patients require, the statement said. – TradeArabia News Service
