Wastewater treatment plant in Bahrain closes down

MANAMA, February 26, 2015

A wastewater treatment plant that serves Riffa Views, the Royal Golf Club and Awali announced last night (February 25) it was shutting down.

Metito said that it was ‘forced to make the difficult decision’ and was demobilising, reported the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

Alleged default on payments was said to be among the reasons for the shutdown.

“Failure to secure a new workable agreement means that the significant losses incurred by Metito, in continuing to manage the plant, have become unsustainable,” the firm said.

“The shutdown will begin immediately with all treatment operations ceasing entirely within the next 24 to 48 hours. Starting today, Metito will not be responsible for the management and treatment of wastewater at Riffa Views.

“For any concerns and/or complains, the company suggests residents to revert to the community management company and the Royal Golf Club or whoever they appoint as the first point of contact.”

Metito general manager Walid Madwar said that the decision was ‘extremely difficult’ as the plant has managed the area since 2005.

“Despite being repeatedly promised that issues related to non-payment would be resolved, we are now in a situation where Metito is owed millions of Bahrani dinars,” he said.

“We have been incurring significant financial losses on a daily basis, which have simply become unsustainable.

“On behalf of Metito, I would like to apologise to anyone who will be affected by the shutting down of this plant, but I can assure them that we have simply been left with no other choice.

“We have saved no effort to avoid this decision, but this was not reciprocated and we can no longer run the plant without our contracts being honoured.” - TradeArabia News Service
