Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi to focus on Covid-19 research

ABU DHABI, November 26, 2020

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, has announced plans to focus new research capabilities, developed with the assistance of a grant from Citi, in support of UAE healthcare efforts to study and understand Covid-19.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s studies, which will focus on Covid-19’s local infection patterns, have been made possible through a $10 million grant provided by Citi. The funding has contributed to developing a number of research projects in Abu Dhabi, including the hiring of dedicated staff, working with the Academic Office.

The grant will also support the development of a new cohort of staff, consisting of senior physician-scientists and their teams, which include UAE nationals serving as trainees and residents.

The team will drive new research, innovation and education, contributing to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s role as a leading academic research centre.

Mentored by senior physician investigators, many of the hospital’s residents are already involved in research projects, which are part of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s clinical centres of excellence, including heart and vascular, ophthalmology, as well as cancer studies.

“As part of our mission to serve the community, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is focused on clinical excellence, education and research. With the support of Citi, we were able to boost our research excellence to complement our medical education capabilities, enhance our innovation footprint, and ultimately improve the quality of care delivered to our patients,” said Dr Murat Tuzcu, Chief Academic Officer, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

“Our collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is in line with our mission of enabling progress, by enhancing the capacity of a world-class medical provider,” said Elissar Farah Antonios, Citi Cluster Head for UAE, Levant & Iraq.

“The use of a portion of the grant to fund Covid-19 research in the UAE adds to our global efforts in the fight against the pandemic.”

Citi has been actively donating towards Covid-19 relief efforts in the region, with more than $4 million already donated to various funds and NGOs in the Middle East and Africa.

These efforts are part of a $100 million commitment by Citi and the Citi Foundation in support of Covid-19-related community relief efforts around the world. -- Tradearabia News Service
