Manama, November 29, 2007

Energy Central Co., an integrated utilities provider based in Bahrain, has won a $300 million contract at Saudi Iron & Steel Company (Hadeed).

The company has been appointed by Zamil Industrial Investment Company as the main contractor to deliver and operate the complete outsourcing of process and comfort cooling at Hadeed. This follows the recent signing of contracts between Sabic, on behalf of Hadeed, and Zamil Industrial.

Hadeed, a subsidiary of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic), is the largest steel manufacturing company in the Middle East, and one of the largest fully integrated complexes of its kind in the world.

Zamil Industrial has awarded the 22-year contract to utility provider Energy Central to design, build, finance and operate a highly efficient central cooling plant, extensive transmission and distribution pipe work, as well as maintain and upgrade all in-building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment within the premises, a phenomenal 2,500 mechanical systems, equipment and devices.

Furthermore, the contract also covers the proposed energy conservation measure (ECM) related to the implementation of a power generation scheme by using the waste heat from Hadeed's reheating furnaces - bar and rod mills.

Commenting on the award of this contract, Abdulla M Al Zamil, chief operating officer at Zamil Industrial, said: “This first-of-its-kind agreement in the Gulf region will usher a new era of utility outsourcing for large industrial and commercial players who want to focus on their own service delivery. We fully intend to participate by providing solutions together with our strategic and specialised partners to support clients in their quest.”

Khalil Issa, CEO of Energy Central, added: “Energy Central is the only provider of fully integrated utility solutions in the region. By integrating various utilities we are able to offer a cost effective and energy efficient solution that benefits both the client and the environment. We look forward to working with Zamil Industrial on this ground breaking project.” -TradeArabia News Service
