Dubai sugar refinery shut on slow demand

Dubai, April 13, 2011

Dubai's Al Khaleej sugar refinery, one of the the largest sugar refineries the world, said it shut operations on April 8 due to a slow demand.

"The refinery is still shut down and will reopen when demand picks up," Cyrus Raja, general manager of Al Khaleej told Reuters on Wednesday.

The refinery sold back 100,000 tonnes of raw sugar to the market due to lack of demand.

Al Khaleej had shut down on February 1 this year due the low premium commanded by white sugar over raw sugar but reopened on February 28. - Reuters
