14pc UAE GDP 'comes from logistics'

Around 14 per cent of UAE’s GDP is being contributed by the supply chain and logistics sector which has become an integral part of the country's economy, said a top Dubai Chamber official.
 
"The secret of Dubai’s success as a supply chain and logistics hub is its air-sea-land multi-modular transportation options. Dubai’s supply chain and logistics sectors are dominated by DP World, Dubai World Central, Jafza and Dubai International Airport,"  remarked Atiq J. Nassib, the senior director, Dubai Chamber.
 
"Cargo Village and Port Rashid also play a significant role in the industry. Dubai’s supply chain and logistics sector saw growth even during the downturn and will continue to grow. Dubai is an attractive destination for the global logistics firms due to the city’s modern and extensive infrastructure," he added.
 
He was addressing a gathering of logistics industry experts from over 20 countries at the ‘6th Global Logistics and Supply Chain summit’ held last week in Dubai.
 
With a core objective of further growing the UAE’s logistics sector, the Supply Chain and Logistics Group (SCLG) hosted over 200  delegates and industry experts from more than 20 countries at the summit.
 
SCLG is a not for profit business group working under patronage of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 
 
It is engaged in advancing and addressing the challenges of the supply chain and logistics industry. 
 
The summit was supported by many leading organizations namely, DP World, SAP, Al Futtaim Logistics, ADPC, Etihad Rail, Dulsco, Zensar Technologies and Crowne Horwath among organisations.
 
According to Nassib, SCLG had put together a world class summit that has far exceeded expectations every year. 
 
"SCLG is aiming to go global by 2020 and reach out to over 100 countries. We are determined to achieve this feat. Dubai, the vibrant and dynamic city of innovation and global trade facilitation is set to become the largest global logistics and supply chain hub due well developed ports, maritime, aviation industry and freezones," stated Shashi Shekhar, the chairman of SCLG and the president and CEO of innovaX. 
 
"Dubai in itself is an example of great leadership for innovation. Dubai has proven visionary leadership, business agility and execution ability to deliver perfect solutions to individuals and organizations for any business vertical," he added.
 
Dr Kanak Madrecha, the president (Global Development) SCLG said the supply chain and logistics have been identified as a great contributor to the bottom-line of any organization. 
 
"Increased pace of globalization, changing speed of business, ever changing technological space and emerging economies (in Asia, BRICS, Danube region in Europe) require continuous transformation of supply chain for organizations in all industry vertical and hence the summit is developed to transfer knowledge content of applicable tools, processes and technologies to the participants that can be leveraged for quick, short term, mid - term and long term goals within their organizations," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
