Khayyal ... mission to enhance global food security

DuPont to highlight corporate role in food security

DUBAI, February 8, 2015

DuPont will highlight the involvement of corporates in resolving food security challenges in a panel discussion at Gulfood 2015, the world’s biggest food and hospitality show, that opened in Dubai, UAE today (February 8).

DuPont will address the World Food Security Summit at the Gulfood Leaders Conference 2015 taking place at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

“Food security represents a growing global challenge, as the world’s population increases by more than 75 million people each year, reaching more than 9 billion by 2050,” said Amin Khayyal, general manager, DuPont UAE.

“At DuPont, food security is at the heart of our priorities. Across the globe, DuPont businesses – DuPont Pioneer, Crop Protection, Nutrition & Health, Packaging & Industrial Polymers, and Industrial Biosciences– are addressing food security with science-based innovations. DuPont is committed to driving food security efforts locally, sustainably and collaboratively with customers, business partners, governments and public-private partnerships to address these challenges.”

The World Food Security Summit at the Gulfood 2015 will discuss the role of the private sector to tackle the food security challenges and develop strategies to encourage alliances and initiatives. The summit will also open a dialogue to agricultural development and ways in which multinational organizations can contribute towards a reduction in food wastage.

“As a socially responsible organization, in 2012, DuPont announced goals to enhance global food security that would be realized by the end of 2020,” said Khayyal.

“DuPont has allocated $10 billion for research and development to launch 4,000 new products. In addition, we will engage 2 million youths in various educational opportunities across the world. Lastly, we will also work to improve the lives of 3 million farmers and their rural communities through targeted collaborations and investments. DuPont looks forward to an interactive and insightful participation at Gulfood 2015.”

Addressing food security challenges, DuPont conceived of the idea for a comprehensive analytical tool – the Global Food Security Index – to measure food security country by country. The Index is a dynamic benchmarking tool that deepens the dialogue on food security by examining the core issues of food affordability, availability and quality and safety in 109 countries.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research arm of The Economist Group, developed this tool in 2012 with exclusive sponsorship from DuPont. A keynote speech by EIU at the Gulfood Summit will discuss Global Food Security Index and The GCC Food Security Score.  – TradeArabia News Service
