Drydocks World chief on top 50 maritime greats list

DUBAI, March 14, 2015

Khamis Juma Buamim, the chairman of Drydocks World & Maritime World, has been recognised by Tanker Shipping & Trade as being among the top 50 most influential people in the tanker industry worldwide> He is one of only four chairmen globally to be so recognised.

The publications annual survey profiles 50 of the sectors most influential leaders whose range of achievements is broad, covering most, if not all facets of the industry.

Riviera Maritime Media, which publishes Tanker Shipping & Trade is based in London and specialises in maritime information, publishing a range of maritime technical journals, holding related events, supplying shipping data and communicating it worldwide.

All the 50 names represent outstanding examples of leadership, especially given their achievements against the backdrop of some of the most challenging trading conditions in a generation. The list represents leaders from 21 countries representing all of the continents and includes four women.

In nominating Buamim, the publication noted that after coming on board in 2010 to first rescue and then stabilise DDW, the company five years on, is on an even keel winning prestigious and technically innovative and challenging projects.

The nomination also commented on Buamim's increased role on the global stage championing green technologies, sensible regulations and greater international awareness, said a statement from DDW.

Special mention was also made of the project championed by him to convert two Aframax tankers to modular capture vessels for AET operating in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Top 50 list boasts of “Who’s Who’ in the maritime sector including luminaries such as Abdalla Salem Al Badri, the secretary general Opec, Khalid Al Falih, the president and chief executive of Saudi Aramco, Hor Weng Yew, the president and chief executive of AET, Moten Engelstoft, the CEO of Maersk Tankers, Bob Bishop, the executive director at V Ships, Bjorn Hojgaard, the CEO of Univan Ship Management, John Ridgway, the CEO of BP Shipping, Dr Grahaeme Henderson, the vice president of shipping and maritime, Shell International Trading & Shipping, Mukesh Ambani, the chairman & managing director of Reliance Industries, Talal Al Khaled Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the CEO of Kuwait Oil Tanker Company.

On his nomination, Buamim, said: "To be counted among such names is indeed an honour and privilege. I am humbled. None of what has been achieved or what is to be achieved would have been possible without the support and the direction offered to me by the wise leadership of Dubai & the UAE."
