Mandatory regulataions on tyres produced or sold in
Saudi Arabia to be launched

New tyre rules in Saudi Arabia from November

RIYADH, July 30, 2015

New regulations governing tyres produced or sold in Saudi Arabia will come into force in November, said the board of the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation.

The technical regulations have set limits for the rolling resistance on wet surfaces, as per the announcement made by the board, said an Arab News report.

There are six classifications to this effect: excellent, very good, good, average, bad and very bad, it added.

The timetable for the application of regulations for rolling resistance requirements will take place in two stages. The first is from January 2015 to December 31, 2019, and the second is from January 1, 2019 onwards, said the report.

The board clarified that motorists could acquire tire efficiency cards in circulation from the manufacturers or their agents and importers through a web portal.

This comes after the board adopted technical regulations for procedures of recording data and issuing cards on energy efficiency in vehicles and tyres which align with the efforts of the Saudi Program for Energy Efficiency (SPEE).

The SPEE, in cooperation with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Saudi Customs Authority, has held a series of workshops to introduce the requirements for tyres and has thus increased its role in improving the overall energy efficiency of vehicles in the kingdom.

These workshops were held at the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Riyadh, Jeddah, Madinah, Qassim, Hail, Eastern Provicne, Skaka, Abha, Jazan, Tabuk and other regions of Saudi Arabia, it added.
