Antimony processing plant...under construction at Sohar Port

Oman antimony project signs deal with European firm

MUSCAT, August 4, 2015

Strategic & Precious Metals Processing (SPMP), the promoters of a major antimony processing plant under construction at Sohar Port and Free Zone, has signed an offtake agreement with a leading European firm, according to a report.

The Luxembourg-headquartered minerals and metals trading firm Traxys Europe will supply the feedstock as well as offtake the finished product in a preliminary deal concluded by the two sides, said the Oman Daily Observer report.

As a ‘nominated trading party’, Traxys will also extend related financing and other services to the metallurgical venture, it said.

The construction work on the estimated $62 million roaster is under-way on a 22-hectare plot at the free zone adjoining the Sohar Port.

The project has a nameplate design capacity of 20,000 tonnes comprising a combination of antimony metal for export and a finished version of ‘high tint’ antimony trioxide (ATO) for use as a flame retardant, as well as in the global chemicals industry.

The feedstock supply and offtake agreement is the latest in a string of milestones that have helped spur the execution and timely completion of the project, the report added.
