Egypt domestic wheat imports to remain stable

CAIRO, November 30, 2015

Egypt, the world's biggest importer of wheat, will grow around 3.3 million feddans of wheat in the next season, roughly the same amount cultivated the year before, supply minister Khaled Hanafy told Reuters.

"I don't expect this season to be less than this amount, and it might even be more," Hanafy said.

In early November Egypt slashed its wheat subsidies, infuriating farmers and threatening to cut future harvests.

The supply minister also said he expects Egypt's wheat imports to remain stable in the coming year. – Reuters
