Emirates Steel highlights industry issues at Dubai event

DUBAI, May 9, 2016

Emirates Steel, the only integrated steel plant in the UAE, participated and highlighted several crucial industry related issues at the recent 4th World DRI & Pellet Congress held in Dubai, UAE.  

The company’s delegation headed by Eng Ahmed Salem Al Dhaheri, chief commercial officer (CCO), debated alongside some of the most reputable iron and steel companies, issues related to the challenging industry conditions, developments of global steel industry scene and the direct-reduced iron (DRI) role in market recovery, said a statement from the Emirates Steel, owned by Senaat.

The congress brought together participants from around the world, representing the entire DRI supply chain to lay out their vision of the steel market, through panel discussions focusing on topics such as the main challenges facing the industry, and ways to adapt to new market pressures, it said.

Representing Emirates Steel, Al Dhaheri participated in the opening discussion panel alongside a handful of leading experts as they discussed several outlooks on the DRI role in the hopes of attaining high grade value products, environmental sustainability and DRI benefits in order to penetrate new markets, it added.

He further explained the strategy that Emirates Steel is following to face recent market challenges such as the collapse of pricing structure and high raw material costs for DRI producers, which pertains of enhancing efficiencies, focusing on product differentiation and productivity rates while reducing costs where possible and moving towards value added products

The panel discussed current market pressures due to inflow of cheap steel imports to the region and Emirates Steel’s approach in working with the concerned authorities to mitigate the situation impacts and ensure fair trade. Eng Ahmed expressed optimistic views on the future of the region’s steel sector, said the statement.

The event was attended by attendees representing the DR grade iron ore suppliers, technology suppliers, consultants, traders, DRI producers and steel makers, and covered issues such as Middle East and North Africa (Mena) DRI and opportunities in the industry, DRI and Scrap in the Mena region and beyond, iron ore DR grade pellet supply and pelletizing technology, it stated.

With cutting edge technologies represented, the congress showcased an excellent opportunity to adapt to this evolving market, and participants were able to network with key manufacturing industry figures involved with all aspects of the DRI and steel manufacturing processes, it added. – TradeArabia News Service
